How much of a difference can a little candle make? When placed next to a brightly burning fire, it seems so small, so insignificant. Like it would make no difference if it just stopped burning. But move that same little candle into a dark room, and it shines so brightly and gives light to the entire room! Even if we can’t see the difference so clearly, the effects are still there.

In the same way, Jesus said that we are to be lights.

“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in Heaven.”

Matthew 5:14-16

In the same way that a city on top of a hill can’t be hid from sight, a burning fire cannot be hid by the darkness. No matter how dark the darkness may be, or how small the spark may be, the darkness can never overshadow the light. The light will always drive away the darkness.

When you light a candle, would you ever take that candle and put it under a basket, hiding it’s light from view? No, what would be the point of lighting the candle then?! A candle is lit to give light, and will be put in a place where its light can be clearly seen.

In the same way, we are to be lights to the dark world. The light of Jesus shining brightly through our lives. Everything that we do, say, and think should reflect this light. God has given us this light as a testimony to His glory. Our light will point back to Him, and bring glory to His name.

“Do all things without murmurings and disputings: that ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;”

Philippians 2:14-15

As Believers, our lifestyles should be radically different from those of the world. The ways in which we act, the things that we do, and the things that we say should be SO different from that of the world. So different, in fact, that we stand out like bright lights shining in a dark night.

Sometimes, it will be hard. We may not want to stand out, and instead try to hide our light so that we blend in more with the world. But like putting a basket over a candle, why should we hide the beautiful light that God has given us? Yes, it may be hard. We may not want to stand out. But we must take that step. Step out into the darkness, and let your light shine forth brightly!

Our light may bring with it hardship and persecution. The world is trying frantically to stamp out the light, to get rid of it any way that it can. It hates the light.

“And this is the condemnation, that Light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.”

John 3:19-21

Yes, it will be hard, but Jesus never promised that it would be easy. In fact, He told us that it wouldn’t be. He told us that the world would hate us.

“If the world hate you, ye know that it hated Me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.”

John 15:18-19

“Yea, and all that live Godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.”

2 Timothy 3:12

Yes we will be hated, and the road will be rough, but it is not in vain!

“Holding forth the Word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.”

Philippians 2:16

We may not be able to see the results right now, in fact we may never get to see them in this lifetime, but a life lived for Christ is never in vain! He IS using everything for His good purposes!

And, knowing this, even in the midst of suffering, we can rejoice!!

“Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake. Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven.”

Luke 6:22-23a

The world is such a dark, dark place right now. There is just so much evil and terrible things happening. But God has given us a precious gift. Boldly step out, and shine forth the light of Jesus in this dark time! Don’t be afraid of what may lie ahead, for God is both behind and before us. Holding and guiding, and helping to the end. Don’t be afraid of the darkness, for no matter what the world may try to do to us, the darkness can never overcome the light. No matter how the war looks right now, the end is drawing near, and God WILL triumph in the end! Take courage, and fear not: for truly, we have nothing to fear!

“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thy heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.”

Psalm 27:1, 14

Step forth, dear Believer, and SHINE! Shine brightly for HIM!

“Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.”

1 Timothy 6:12
